Traditional compost starters are aerobic and require air, turning, and months to break down waste. Hawaiian Bokashi™ Inoculant works anaerobically, meaning it doesn’t require oxygen and works in sealed containers. It ferments food waste rather than decomposing it with heat, allowing you to compost a wider variety of items (including cooked food) with no foul odors. It also works much faster—typically in 2 to 4 weeks.

You can compost almost all kitchen scraps, including:

Assuming a depth of 1 yard, 5 cubic yards equals 5 square yards. If you opt for 1 pound per square yard, you'll need approximately 5 pounds of Bokashi Inoculant for healthy vegetable soil.

1. Collect kitchen scraps in a Bokashi bin or airtight bucket.
2. Sprinkle a handful of the inoculant over every 1–2 inches of food waste.
3. Press the contents down to remove air pockets.
4. Seal the lid tightly to create an anaerobic (air-free) environment.
5. Repeat the layering process until the bin is full.
6. Let it ferment for 2–4 weeks, then bury the pre-compost in your garden soil or add it to a compost pile.

Typically, the fermentation process takes 2 to 4 weeks in a sealed Bokashi bucket. After that, the pre-compost can be buried in your garden soil, where it continues to break down and enrich the soil for another 2–4 weeks. Full decomposition time may vary depending on climate and soil conditions.
